We are all familiar with what happened during the fall. As the story goes, Eve was tempted by the serpent, she ate from the tree of life, gave some of the fruit to Adam and they fell from grace. Very rarely do we consider the severe consequences of their actions, and what the world would have been like if they had remained obedient to God. Here are some things to consider.

Marriage Has Become a Curse: I have never wanted to get married for several reasons. First because I am so focused on my vision that I simply don’t have the time for a relationship, and second it is not something I desire. You’ve only got to look at the world we live in today to know that the joy of marriage left the earth a long time ago. Divorce and blended families are the new normal, even amongst believers. People just can’t seem to get it right. But why is that? I believe that it is one of the consequences of the fall. In Genesis chapter 2, God said: It is not good that man should live alone (Genesis 2:18). But in the book of Corinthians, Paul states, if at all possible, abstain from getting married (1 Corinthians 7:8). Is this a contradiction? I don’t think so.

Before the fall it was not good that man should live alone, life was perfect, Adam and Eve would have loved each other passionately for eternity. They had no desire to want another partner because they were totally satisfied with each other. After the fall, things changed, their eyes were opened and suddenly, they wanted more out of life, their habits became annoying and they found it difficult to live together. Then the kids came, and things got even worse.

Children Have Become a Curse: Cain killed his own brother because of jealousy, can you imagine how Adam and Eve felt? It is impossible to put into words the devastation they experienced. Today, kids are more unruly than ever, they are committing more heinous crimes than Cain and Abel. Once you become a parent, that’s it, you are stuck with your offspring for life, they are totally dependent upon you and there is nothing you can do about it. Some people find it so difficult to handle parenthood that they give their children up for adoption, some don’t even get that far and abort the baby before it is born. You’ve only got to do a quick Google search to discover how many people regret having children.

I have never wanted children, the thought of being responsible for another human for the rest of my life does not appeal to me at all. But this was not God’s original intention.

Lust Has Become the Norm: It is normal for married couples to desire other people. Some take it as far as indulging in swingers parties where couples willingly sleep with other people. God designed lust for marriage, that intense attraction that the opposite sex have for one another was not supposed to extend outside of the marital bed.

These are just a few of the consequences of the fall that we rarely think about. The good news is that despite the fact that the world is in complete disarray, we have the hope and the promise of eternity.

Gratitude is something we should practice daily. You should be grateful for the fact that you are alive and reading this because some people went to bed last night and didn’t wake up in the morning. They had plans for today that were never fulfilled because they came to the end of their days. In the past week alone, one of my uncle’s died. He travelled to Africa to attend his brother’s funeral, went to bed one night and had a heart attack in his sleep, his family members found him dead in his bed. Another friend of mine, her 24-year-old son had a sudden brain aneurism, as I write this, he is in a coma, the doctors don’t know whether he is going to survive.

It is easy to operate out of an ungrateful heart because we are so focused on what we don’t have, but when you can focus on what you do have and the sheer awesomeness of the God you serve, gratitude will spring forth from your heart like streams of living water. Here are three psalms you can pray to show gratitude to God.

Psalms 150: There are really no words to describe how wonderful and mighty our God is, but Psalms 150 is a great place to start, it is short and sweet and one of the Psalms that I have memorised. Verse 6 is my favourite line of the Psalm, “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!” In other words, if you’ve got breath in your body, you’ve got no excuse not to praise His holy name.

Psalms 95: With verses like, “In His hand are the deep places of the earth; the heights of the hills are His also. The sea is His for He made it; and His hands formed the dry land,” you can’t help but worship the Lord. This Psalm will quickly usher you into the presence of God.

Psalms 75: The wicked may think they have gotten away with their evil deeds, but we serve a righteous judge, and they will not go unpunished. Psalms 75 reminds us that our God is one of justice and in His time, His wrath shall be revealed.

Depression is a very real disorder and it affects many Christians. I have said this in a previous blog post and I will say it again, believers often avoid the issue of mental illness because of the stigma attached to it and the belief that you are somehow less of a Christian if you are not walking in the joy of the Lord at all times. This was not a reality when the Bible was written, and it is not a reality now. Some of the most powerful prophets of God suffered from mental illness; most notably Elijah. Do you think he just decided he wanted to kill himself because Queen Jezebel had threatened his life? Depression doesn’t come on you out of the blue like that; I believe he had been feeling this way for a while and we just saw it manifest in that instance.

May I add, that in some cases depression is more than a spiritual issue and praying a few Psalms will not free you from it. Some people battle with depression because there is a chemical imbalance in the body, low serotonin can have a negative effect on your mood and cause you to fall into a depression that you find impossible to get out of. So if you find that prayer is not working for you, seek medical help. With that being said, here are three Psalms that will help you battle with depression.

Psalm 61: In verse 1 and 2 we read, “Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You; when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” David was another biblical legend who suffered from depression. Read his words again, “when my heart is overwhelmed,” isn’t that what it feels like when depression has taken over your soul? But even in his anguish, David knows where his help will come from.

Psalms 46: In verses 1-3 we read, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though its waters roar and be troubled. Though the mountains shake with its swelling.” Imagine feeling so overwhelmed with trouble that you compare it to the mountains shaking? This is how David felt during his darkest moments. But in verse 10 we read, “Be still and know that I am God”, what a comforting thought.

Psalms 6: There were times in David’s life that he became so weary with despair that he cried all night. In verses 6-7 we read: “I am weary with my groaning; all night I make my bed swim; I drench my couch with tears. My eye wastes away because of grief; it grows old because of my enemies. In verses 8-9 David quickly changes his disposition and states: “Depart from me all you workers of iniquity; for the Lord has heard the voice of my weeping. The Lord has heard my supplication; the Lord will receive my prayer.”

2 Timothy 1:7 – “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

Fear is a crippling evil that will stop you from reaching your full potential in life. Throughout the scriptures we are vehemently warned against the spirit of fear; however, abandoning fear is easier said than done, especially if you have been operating in it your entire life. There is a huge misconception in the church that once you are saved your life is automatically transformed and you become a new person. Your spirit is renewed but your mind is not; therefore, you’ve got to do some work to free yourself from the bondages that have been holding you back. Here are three signs that you are bound by fear.

You Refuse to Speak in Public: One of the most common fears is the fear of public speaking. There is nothing unique about it, we read about it in the book of Exodus when Moses was trying to convince God that he wasn’t the man for the job (Exodus 4:10). But if you have been called to preach the gospel, it is imperative that you overcome this fear.

You Avoid People: Social anxiety is another crippling fear that has a negative effect on your calling. Whether you are an accountant, lawyer or a checkout clerk, all Christians have been called to minister the Good News. When you suffer from social anxiety, you invest a lot of time and energy into avoiding people; which means not only are you hindering your own progress, you are also hindering the progress of those who have been assigned to you.

You Run From Your Problems: Whether you are in debt, you are having problems in your marriage, or you’ve had an argument with a friend, brushing your problems under the carpet is not going to solve them. Fear will have you running from the consequence of your actions, but the longer you leave it, the worse it gets.

Overcoming fear is not as simple as quoting scriptures and expecting a miracle. You will need to put the work in and actively confront your fears by walking them out.

“And he who died came out bound hand and foot with grave-clothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “loose him and let him go.” – John 11:44

“Rest in peace,” reads the headstone of the grave that has been metaphorically dug for you. Your life has so spiralled out of control that friends, family and loved ones have written you off as a lost cause. You have given up on yourself, and can’t see anyway out of the hell that you have been living in. You feel as if there is nowhere to turn, hopelessness, despair and despondency have overtaken you. 

In the eleventh chapter of the book of John, we read the story of a man named Lazarus from the town of Bethany, he is the brother of Mary and Martha. After Lazarus became sick, his sisters called Jesus to heal him. By the time Jesus arrived, Lazarus had been dead for four days, and the town was in mourning. There was not one person who believed that he would rise again. In verse 39, Jesus instructed the bystanders to, “Take away the stone,” their response was, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.” 

The length of time that Lazarus had been dead was of no consequence to Jesus, He knew that He had power over life and death. When he released the words, “Lazarus come forth” from His spirit, verse 44 says, “And he who had died came out…” 

If you put your trust in the Lord, and lean not on your own understanding, Jesus Christ, the Bright and Morning Star, The Lion Of The Tribe Of Judah will resurrect every dead situation in your life. The bible says, “With man it is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Whatever it is that has you bound, no matter how long you have been down in the gutter, if you allow Jesus to direct your steps, “Rest in peace” will transcend into “Rise in power. “Oh Lord be gracious to us; we have waited for You. Be their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble.” – Isaiah 33:2

Isaiah chapter 33 focuses on the turmoil faced by Judah and Jerusalem by Sennacherib’s invasion. In this verse, the prophet lifts up his voice to the Lord, as he contemplated the judgement that was about to come upon the Jews. The arm symbolises strength, it is used throughout scripture as an emblem of divine protection. He prayed this way because God had already given him the prophecy concerning the invasion.

The bible warns us that we are going to be attacked by the enemy, 1 Peter 5:8, says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.” Therefore, like Isaiah, we should ask God to be gracious to us, and protect us from the wiles of Satan.

The scripture says, “Be their arm every morning,” we must start our day prayerfully asking for Gods protection and guidance. Communion with a God that we cannot see does not come naturally, it is a habit that we must cultivate. Prior to Jesus crucifixion, and Jesus was in the garden of Gethsemane with his disciples, He told them to, “Watch and pray,” but when He came back, He found them asleep. Jesus said “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:40-41).

The enemy is constantly watching, waiting to attack us in our areas of weakness, unless the spirit is stronger than the flesh we will fall. One way to strengthen the spirit is through prayer. As soon as we open our eyes in the morning, the devil is looking for an opportunity to assail, if we arm ourselves with strength for the battle in the early hours, we will have the power to stand against the devices of Satan. All of the prominent men and women in the bible sought God in the morning, David said, “Early will I seek thee” – Psalms 63:1. “Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.” – Mark 1:35

Waking up an hour before you’ve got to leave the house and saying a two minute prayer while you are on your way out of the door is not going to cut it. Go to bed early, and rise early so you can sit in the presence of the Lord before you go on your way.

There is an special union that takes place when you give God your time first thing in the morning. Become an early riser, and experience a new depth in your relationship with Christ.

I suffer from a very rare form of anxiety; I don’t like talking about it or thinking about it because it makes me anxious. But it’s there and some days are worse than others. As believers we often shy away from mental illness because we fear that it will make us look like we don’t trust God – you know, since according to Philippians 4:6 we should be worried and anxious for nothing right? But the reality is that the devil has got a job to do, and that is to kill, to steal and to destroy (John 10:10) and that is exactly what he is going to do. One of his tactics is to steal your peace by attacking you with anxiety, but praise be to God, we have a weapon of warfare that we can hurl back in his face and that weapon is prayer.

He had sleepless nights where he wept until his pillow was drenched with tears (Psalms 6:6), there were times when he was so afraid that his bones were shaking (Psalms 6:2). But David overcame these negative feelings with prayer. Here are three of the psalms he wrote during his worst days.

1: Psalms 23: This Psalm reminds us that God is our faithful shepherd, we can turn to Him during times of trouble and He will still the noise in our minds with His gentle love.

2: Psalms 121: In these verses we read that we have help in the Lord. No matter what we are going through, we can lift our eyes up to Him and He will deliver us. The Lord is constantly watching over His children, and He will not allow the storms of life to overtake us.

3: Psalms 91: When your mind is raging a war against your soul, it frightens you. Praying Psalms 91 will provide you with the comfort you need during times of trouble.

I make these psalms personal and replace the word “you” with “I”, it makes me feel secure knowing that the Lord is speaking directly to me. When I go through periods of anxiety, I pray through these Psalms until I feel calm again.

Ephesians 4:32 – “And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”

When I became a Christian, I had a big problem with the concept of forgiveness, not for myself but for other people. I was surrounded by women who had the most horrendous things done to them as children. One of the worst stories I ever heard was from a lady whose mother got her addicted to heroin at the age of seven and sold her into prostitution. How could God expect her to forgive her mother? How can God expect the parents whose child has been murdered to forgive the perpetrator? I could not reconcile with this, and I still don’t have the answers. I can only assume that God will empower those who come to Him with the supernatural strength to do so.

Despite how difficult it is, as with every God given command, there is a principle behind it. According to the American Psychological Association, forgiveness is connected to the mind and body, unforgiveness is linked to chronic anger, anxiety, depression, a weakened immune system and a host of other negative physical ailments. Therefore, forgiveness is not about the other person, it’s about you. In my last blog post I wrote about vengeance. The same principle applies here, when someone has wronged you, it is only normal that you are going to want to get revenge on that person. The desire to want revenge only leads to anger, but once you have got revenge you are still angry. I met a woman in prison who had killed a man for raping her daughter, she had a life sentence, and even though she was satisfied with the fact that the perpetrator was dead, she was still very angry.

It doesn’t mean that you should become their best friend, forgiveness is not about reconciliation, especially if you are at risk. It is about allowing God to take control; He said that “vengeance is mine,” so trust and do believe that the person who has wronged you is not going to get away with it.

I had to forgive my prosecutor and judge for conspiring to ensure that I was convicted. I was able to forgive them for two reasons; first, I understand that we do not fight against flesh and blood, and that anyone who attacks me is being used by the devil. Second, I can now see the benefits of my incarceration; and in fact, I am grateful that they sent me to prison because I wouldn’t be the person that I am today if I had gone home when I wanted to.

I am in no way suggesting that forgiveness is easy, but what I do know is that the Spirit of God has changed my perspective in many areas. With man, it might look impossible, but with God, all things are possible.

Romans 12:19 – “Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay,” says the Lord.”

I used to be a fighter, you couldn’t say one bad word about me, my family, my friends or Michael Jackson (I am his greatest fan), without getting a black eye. If I so much as heard that someone might have said something, that person was either getting a phone call, I would turn up outside their school, or I would show up on their doorstep! I was always involved in some type of drama and would fly off the handle if I thought I was being attacked in any way. I spent the majority of my time and energy fighting. My friends knew who to call if they needed backup, whether night or day, I would be there ready to throw the first punch. In fact, most of my friends didn’t need to fight their own battles, because I would fight on their behalf.

I had stopped fighting long before I went to prison, I grew out of it, but I was still involved in verbal wars. I would let some things slide, but most of the time, it was very easy to get a reaction out of me.

People pretty much left me alone in jail, I stood on the side lines and observed the culture of the institution and learnt very quickly that if you stay to yourself, and don’t talk too much, you can avoid getting on anyone’s bad side, and so that’s exactly what I did. But when I met Jesus and started speaking to the women about God, that is when the attacks came.

There were many instances where women attempted to destroy my reputation. I used to hold a prayer circle once a week, and one lady (a very well respected inmate due to the length of time she has been incarcerated), decided to go from cell to cell and tell them that they shouldn’t attend the prayer circle because I was a killer, that I was evil and that I was praying to demons to ensure that no one got out of jail because I knew I was going to prison for life. That evening, very few women attended the prayer circle.

My instincts were to approach the lady, and then go around the dorm defending myself. But the Holy Spirit had given me a clear word regarding the situation. First, Ephesians 6:12 states, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” The battle is not physical, it is spiritual, but the devil and his demons can not do their work unless they have a willing human vessel to work through, so when Christians are under attack for no other reason other than the fact that they are born again and trying to do the work of the Lord, it is important to understand that those attacks are coming from the kingdom of darkness. The devil knows that there is nothing he can do to Jesus because He is seated at the right hand of the Father, but as every parent knows, if you want to hurt them, touch their children. Not only does the devil want to hurt Jesus, he also wants to ensure that the bound remain that way. And what better way to do so than to tarnish the name of the people who are delivering the Gospel?

Instead of trying to vindicate myself, I gave it to God, and not only did he vindicate me, the following week, the person spreading the rumours not only came and apologised to me but went around calling the prayer group in the evening and joined the prayer circle every week after that! There was not one woman left in the dorm during prayer time! Praise Jesus! “When a man’s way’s please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with Him.” – Proverbs 16:7.

Choose your battles wisely, allow God to fight for you and you will see the salvation of the Lord!
